Well, it's been just over a year since I last uploaded some loopbacks (sound
loops) to sumex.  Once again, these are sampled from Miramar's latest computer
animation videotape called "Beyond The Mind's Eye."  (I got "The Mind's Eye"
last year for my birthday, and got its sequel this year).  You can get the
video at Radio Shack, and Blockbuster may have it.  Anyway, these were sampled
with my CEDAR digitizer and came out fairly well, I think.  To those who wrote
me asking for more loops, here you are.

    This one is called "Brave New World."

    These loopbacks are nice to use in any multimedia animations or
anything that can use an instrumental soundtrack in the background.... but
they're also nice just to listen to, and they're long enough that they don't
become irritatingly repetitive.

Crisp, clean, 22 kHz, 8-bit mono, SoundEdit file (type FSSD).

This program should make life easier for those who are converting from
Dollars and $ense to Quicken.  It converts a file with transactions
exported from Dollars and $ense to Quicken's QIF format.  Source is
included.  Macintosh user interface guidelines are NOT followed, but
this should be a program that you only have to use once.

This is a self-extracting archive.

This version automates more of the process than the original version
that was posted in mid-1993.  It can take its input from one big report
instead of requiring a separate input file for each account.  It
doesn't require hand editing of the input file.  It has addresses the
problem of transactions that transfer between two accounts and that are
cleared in both.

Fortune Hangman v1.0

Fortune Hangman is a game that plays the classic hangman game with the
phrases in a UNIX fortune file.  It comes with a fortune file that has
about 650 fortunes.  You can add your own or totally replace the one I have
included with one of your own.  The only catch is that all fortunes must be
less than 84 characters.  I think its pretty habit forming.  I could play
it all day.

Fortune Hangman is System 7 dependant (I think).  I give permission to
include this submission on any CD-ROM produced by the Info-mac moderators.

Here is the latest version of the Supplemental Gestalt
Selectors list.
It contains a lot of information regarding the Gestalt Manager
but mainly about selectors.

Many thanks to the new anonymous contributor for info about all the new
selectors installed by System 7.1 Pro and System 7.5a4. Including those
listed in a header file from Apple. It took a reasonable number of emails
to sort all this info out, but here it is!

And yet another anonymous contributor emailed me the GestaltEqu.h header
file from the ETO #13 CD-ROM. Now a number of selectors are known and

GIFConverter is SHAREWARE, $40 plus S&H.

   You can print on any Macintosh printer (halftones on LaserWriter, color
on ImageWriter II or any color PostScript printer and the LaserWriter 6.0
driver or many other color printers), or save to any of these file formats
plus EPSF! Every feature is fully implemented, so you can test GIFConverter

   This file has been checked for viruses with Disinfectant 3.3.

These are the fixes in this version:

o Fixed a problem with successive mouse commands. This often manifested
itself as improper results when a crop was followed by a drag, for
instance.

o GIFConverter should no longer hang when starting up on a machine with a
French keyboard. GIFConverter searches for the '.' key for implementing
cancelling with command-period. It now finds such a key even if the '.' is
shifted. It will also no longer hang if it can't find a '.' key (I'd be
very interested in finding out about keyboards that don't have one).

o To cancel operations in GIFConverter (when you have the juggler cursor),
press the command key, and type a period. If the period ('.') is shifted,
you must hold down the shift key.

SMF Type Caster is a Drag-and-Drop application that will change
generic Standard MIDI Files to files of type 'Midi' so that they
can be read with Mac sequencers.  This application makes sure the
files that were selected are actually Standard MIDI files before
the file type is changed.  This means if you accidently drag in
a non-MIDI file, the type won't be changed.  You can also double-
click the application and convert one file at a time.  When you
open the application by double clicking, you will be able to change
the destination sequencer.  For example, if you use Performer, the
file creator will become that of Performer and the file type will be
'Midi'.

This program is free but copyright 1994 by Barry Kirsch.  If you
use the program, I would appreciate a note from you.  I am currently
writing a collection of utilities for Standard MIDI Files, including
a batch SMF player (all files opened will play one after another).
Another utility will remap program changes and drum notes from
the General MIDI standard to  your non-GM synthesizer.

If there are any utilities that you would like, let me know and I will
try and include them in later versions.

the MACS is a freeware application which displays a large number of specs for
all Macs that have ever been released.  Search capability is included.  For a
more thorough description, see the help included in the application.

the MACS supports all Macs from the Plus up and all Systems from 4.1 up.

The most noticeable change in this version is the addition of a Mac Type
Picker.  Users who don't like hierarchical menus will probably prefer the
Picker.

Last October Apple introduced no fewer than *sixteen* new Mac models!  That's
more models than they introduced in Macintosh's first 7 1/2 years (unless you
count the 512K and SE FDHD as separate models).  In 1.0b5 I added the new non-
Performa Macs.   This version has the new Performas:  410, 460, 466, 467, 475,
476, 550.  (Actually, five of these just give you an alert saying what other
model they're equivalent to.)

The other changes in version 1.0b6 are:
-Added "Inactive window clicks" and "Polite Mac Type Picker" prefs.  These
 give you control over certain aspects of the user interface.  See
 "Preferences" in the Help dialog.  The Prefs file also records the position
 of the Mac Type Picker and whether or not it is visible.
-Collapsed the "Original" and "Classic" Mac Type menus into one:  "Compact"
-Changed the command key for "Which Macs Have..." from cmd-E to cmd-F
-Made the "About..." box nicer (especially when running in color)
-Minor changes, spec additions/corrections, bug fixes

This is still a beta version of the MACS.  I don't have all the specs yet;
some info is quite difficult to find.  I would really like for people to send
me bug reports, corrections, specs I don't have, and suggestions.

We gave our old mac se to my a relative for Christmas and she is now
having some problems printing.  She does not have a printer so she
brings a disk to the local print shop.  Everytime they try to print
one of her ms word files they get an error that reads "cannot print
- type 1 error."  If they make a copy of the document and then print,
it works fine.  Is this indicative of a problem with her machine or
is it more likely at the print shop.  Thank you in advance for any info

Dear Net,

I have a friend here who has a 12inch color monitor for his LC that
suddenly is out of focus.  Our tech people say that the video logic board
is shot and that it will cost $475.00 to replace it.

I think the cost of the monitor was originally about $300 so I do not think
he will go for it.   It seems to me that if a chip or something on the
board is gone it could be replaced for less than $50.

Does anyone know about monitors and where one can get parts?

Subject: Activating the RAM disk in Sys7.1 and ClassicII upgrade Questions

I have an LCIII and a Classic II and the latter has the most memory.  Since
the LCIII can have a RAM disk I was wondering (short of my picking up a
shareware program) whether the memory control panel in the Classic II can
be modified so I can use the RAM disk option. Both systems are running
7.1 with system hardware update 2.something or other.
Using Rommie I noticed that the LCIII has an extra DRVR resource ie
No. 51 .EDisk.  Using my trusty ResEdit 2.1.1 I placed this in the System
suitcase on my ClassicII then rebooted and tried the memory control panel...
Nope. no sign of the extra RAM disk option.
Examining the Memory control panel with Resedit 2.1.1 I noticed that the
INIT resource has an initial routine which (according to my rusty 68000) checks
the ROM to see if Edisk is present.  Am I right? How do I patch this so it
reads the new DRVR resource in the System Suitcase?  Is there something I'm
missing?  Can some one help me?

Question 2:  Since my wife wants us to keep th Classic II is there a clip
on processor upgrade.  I vaguely remember Dove doing something but I can't
find any info on it

Info service, but neither service seems to have a price list available.  I
recall a few months ago Apple had a commercial on MTV which announced

I ordered a Quadra 840av (stuffed: 1 GB HD, 32 MB memory, internal CD
ROM) in September. Apple had shortage problems and didn't deliver the
Quadra until December.

The Quadra was extensively damaged in shipment.  It looked like the
Mac was run over by the 18-wheeler who delivered it.  There was
substantial internal and external damage.  Our campus computer folks
tried to argue with Apple that the Quadra should be replaced, not
repaired.  It took until January to finally find someone at Apple's
Austin facilities who understood the problem.  He promised to ship a
replacement 840av immediately.

Friday a shipment came from Apple with my account number.  In the
shipment was a new 14" AV *monitor*!  Apparently some bright light
in Austin saw the AV (as in Quadra 840 *AV*) and shipped an AV
monitor instead.  Now the campus computer folks are going through
hoops trying to find someone at Apple who is willing to correct the
problem.  So far, Apple is ignoring their requests for help.

Tomorrow our Apple rep is scheduled to visit the campus.  I plan to
give him an earful!  Five months is absolutely too long to wait for
any computer!  Apple's Austin facility obviously does poorly at
working out user problems (according to our experience at least.)

No doubt that my first purchase of a PowerPC will be from IBM!
I've had it with Apple!

I know I have asked about compression programs before.  I just wondered if
there is any reason to buy DiskDoubler or CopyDoubler if I am buying
Autodoubler?
Is the compression rate any higher with DiskDoubler or CopyDoubler?
Do I save more disk space than with  Autodoubler alone?
Are DiskDoubler's and CopyDoubler's space still more than a MB on the hard
drive after compression?
BTW other than MS Word, what other bugs has anyone encountered using the above
products?
Is there anything faster than Autodoubler that still works in the background
and is non-driver level compression?
I have a Mac LC with 10 MB or RAM and a 40 MB hard disk if that makes any
difference in the above answers.

I've had my 840AV for a few months now, and one annoying thing I've noticed
is that when I play a music CD, the music cuts out at very low levels.  I'm
using the AppleDesign Powered Speakers and headphones, and the result is
the same.  I know the music is there, because I can play it on my living
room CD stereo system.  This happens with all sampling rates.

Seems to me part of the reason you get a CD is to take advantage of the
dynamic range, yet at a certain low level the sound is totally squelched
out!  Has anyone else noticed this?

Me too, I experienced CRC errors when using a BinHex-to-MacBinary translator
(called HexBin).

It seemed to produce errors when the closing colon was the 64th character of
the last line or the only character of the last line - the two boundary cases,
in other words.

I have never known where that HexBin came from, and I have never seen any
sources (except for an IBM VM/CMS version - written in Assembler).

I have now switched to a program called MCvert - that does not exhibit this
kind of problem.

    Look in the back of a MacWorld. I remember seeing an advertisement
in their "classifieds" for needle point (or cross stitch) program. They
did want (what I felt) was a lot of money for it. I seem to remember

    There is also Color Knit here at Sumex. My wife has not looked at
it, so I can't tell you if it is any good, but just so you know...

    There is also a sewing demo program. I think it is called
"Fittingly Sewed" It looked very nice, but it is just a demo and I seem to

I work in a tech support room with variously configured macs. Most have
32-bit addressing turned on. I have this really cool MST3K deskpicture
that I made myself, and back when I was switching macs each week (I've
since been "given" the 900), I found the deskpict extension seemed to be
incompatible with virtual memory, not with 32-bit addressing. I use it on
my 165c at home with 12 megs of ram, so 32 is on and vm is off...and my
Q900 at work has 24 megs in it, so I again do not need to have vm turned
on.

Basically, the phones have been too busy lately for me to play around with
it, but my guess is that it is the vm...if someone could confirm, that
would be cool.

it into the printer's serial port (or get a converter and use the
parallel port), d/l the serial printer driver that is in the archives and

As the slogan goes, just do it. I'm on Appletalk here and also hooked thro'
a gatorbox to the campus fibre-optic network. All I did was plug in the
ethernet connector at the back of my Quadra and everything worked,
including the HP4M already hooked up to my localtalk (printer) port.
However it does it, the machine knows when to sent stuff down the 10BaseT
and when to send it thro' the localtalk wires. No fancy routers needed if
you're already on an ethernet network.

We have recently purchased an HP ScanJet IIC w/ HP DeskScan
software for our clone network.   It will allow files (images) to
be saved as Encapsulated Postscript (EPS), EPS-screen image,
bitmap, TIF 5.0, PCX and several others but unfortunately no
GIF's or PICT's.  Iwant to read the images in to SuperPaint (3.0)
and as they can not be saved as PICTS can not do it directly.  I
have tried reading it into XLATEGRAF (v1.00) I got off the net a
while ago and although XLATE will recognize the the TIFF file it
gives me an error on reading ... any suggestions?

Actually, it's not IconWrap that's having the problem.  The freeware code
that pretty much everyone uses to show an Extension's Icon has been
updated.  The first versions just looked at where the last icon was drawn
and then drew one "slot" over.  The new version of the code is smart enough
to know when it's hit the edge of the screen and it wraps automatically.

The combination of old show-icon code and new show-icon code and what
IconWrap does to all of that can confuse all them little INITs into drawing
their icons all over the place.

That is to say, new revs of IconWrap won't save you as long as you still
have INITs that are using the old code for showing their icons.  In fact,
the best is to update the INITs to the latest version and trash IconWrap
all together.

Subject: LaserWriter IIg problem?

We recently upgraded a LaserWriter IINT to a LaserWriter IIg. The old NT had
performed yeoman service for years with no problem out of the ordinary. A
puzzling problem has cropped up after the upgrade.

The IIg prints fine for a while then stops. PrintMonitor reports "Printing
stopped". The only way we've found to get things going is to cycle the power on
the IIg.

We don't know why we're getting the "Printing stopped" messages. Any ideas will
be appreciated.

The environment is: LaserWriter IIg, a lab of 24 Q700's, System 7.0.1(updated),
LaserWriter driver 7.1.1, PrintMonitor v 1.0.

I am sending this note on behalf of our office, a human service/rehab
facility in behavioral analysis and therapy.

We wish to use the Newton technology for our field data recording.
Unfortunately there does not seem to exist a piece of software to
suit our tasks.

Here is what we need --

Our staff have to do a lot of on-site observations for occurrences of
certain behaviors. One of the frequently used methods is interval recording.
For instance, a 10 minute observation is divided into 60 10-second units
(intervals), where a tally or simple dichotomy of occurrence of a
specific behavior is recorded.

In other words, we need the symbol/code/label of our recording to be
timed, or time-stamped, so we can derive a summary of the frequency of
the behavior, and approximate (as accurate as possible) time the behavior
occurred during these 10-minute observation periods.

Our staff are trained in psychological observations, where they usually
record multiple behaviors using the same interval system. By far such
tasks are done with pencil and paper, with the help of a timer (often a
tape recorder that plays a pre-recorded tape to announce the intervals).
The down side of this is the loss of accuracy and reliability ("between
observer agreements").

The timed interval system can be built with a well designed HyperCard
stack. However, to use HyperCard in field recording requires a high power
Mac which limits the economic feasibility and portability. So we wish to
use the Newon. In my limited research on the Newton market, I have not
been able to find a tool that would integrate the internal clock with
a note-pad type of interface.

So if anybody has any suggestions on this topic, please contact me. I
assume some contracted development can also be an option. However, I do
believe that such a product will be widely demanded in the field of human
services, so it makes good marketing sense to develop something for the
Newton market in general.

If you are a developer and are interested in pursue this need, feel free
to contact me and I will be willing to provide more info about such an
application. I would also like to hear from our colleagues who need
similar products for their work - as to generate a good wish list for
this software product.

A bit of information for Duo 210/230 users:

In an ongoing attempt to get my StyleWriter II, Express Modem, and
MIDI hardware to get along, I've been talking to the Apple Customer
Support group (the 1-800-SOS-APPL people).  One of the guys there
mentioned to me that the new PowerBook Duo Enabler 1.0 is not
recommended for the 210/230, contrary to the name.  He said some
people have experienced problems with this enabler and it should only
be used on the 250 and 270c.  The current version of the System
Enabler 201 is 1.0.1, and he recommended using this instead.  Of
course, this file is no longer on ftp.apple.com.

I'm just passing this along, do with it what you will.

I am using a Beta Internet PMSAM written by Apple.  It works fine on campus,
but not too great with MacPPP.  I have ordered the StarNine Internet Mail Link,
which will allow me to use my PowerTalk mail more efficiently, as it handles
enclosures as MIME enclosures (the Apple beta does not), and should work fine
over ARA or PPP.

and also the MaxFax DA does not work (mainly the init). It is
definately a system compatibility problem since it works fine under
System 7.1 with same inits at boot-up. I need to know if there is
anybody out there that is experiencing the same problems with MaxFax
and 7 Pro. I tried to contact Prometheus Tech Support, but I was
discouraged when the guy I talked to on the phone did not even know
about the new System 7 Pro (7.1.1). So, please write me if you are
having similar difficulties. Thank you.

Subject: Puny Floppy Drive Capacity

The other day, I was trying to resurrect a crashed Mac, and I needed to
copy an application to the newly formatted hard disk which wouldn't also
fit on my emergency boot floppy.  So I "ejected" the boot disk from the
Special menu and started to copy the application from the its disk.  Well,
I go into "Toaster" mode, and finally, 30 or 40 disk swaps later, I'm done.
Any suggestions as to how to avoid this in the future would be very
welcome.

But what I really started thinking about this, was how software has grown
and grown but the primary, universal means of data exchange on our Macs has
stayed the same for many years now (5 years?).  I really think Apple needs
to be gutsy and try to set another, higher, both in performance and
capacity, floppy disk standard.  I have no experience with the 21 Mb
floptical disk drives, but they would seem to be likely candidates.  I know
their media cost is still fairly high, but I remember prices of well over
$10 per HD disk when they were new.

This would give you a reasonable shot at using your internal drive for
backups, and would also solve my first problem above (you were wondering
when I was going to get to the point, eh?).  Any opinions?

Subject: Recycling PowerBook Batteries

I bought a powerbook when they first came out.

I now have 3 dead batteries (well, not dead really. But they
are putting their affairs in order). The problem is that they
are uncomfortable with a burial plot. That is, they have a lot
of heavy metal & etc. and it would be a big load off their mind
if there were some way for them to be recycled.

When I bought my LaserWriter toner cartridge Apple was kind
enough to provide a return UPS label so that the old
fellows could be interred/recycled with grace and respect.

Anything for PowerBook batteries?

Hi.

I have had a most perplexing problem and need some help.  I have a Mac+ at home
with 4MB of RAM and an external Everex 20MB HD.  I am running System 7.  I
have been looking for some more disk space, but find it to be rather expensive
and am hesitant to put much money into the Mac+ anyway.  At any rate, someone
gave me an old MacBottom 20MB to add to the system.  I cabeled it to the Mac+
and the Everex to it.  They had different SCSI ID's.  Nothing happened, so I
removed the Everex and the Mac+ booted off of the MacBottom, which had 6.0.2
on it.  Now the weirdness..I figured that the MacBottom was internally
terminated, which it was.  But when I disconnected the MacBottom and
reconnected
the Everex...nothing.  The Mac+ would not recognize the drive.

I hauled both of the drives into the office and cabled them to my IIsi.  Using
SCSI Probe (a super cdev), I was able to see and mount the Everex, so I was
able to copy the entire disk to the network (whew!).  Although SCSI Probe
was able to see the MacBottom (a RODIME drive version A06), it would not
mount (either with or without SCSI termination nor daisy chained), although
SCSI Probe always saw both drives.  When I took the drives back to the Mac+
nothing had changed.  The Everex could not be seen by the Mac+ and the old
MacBottom booted fine (again, with 6.0.2).

Is there a PROM or something in the Mac+ that was somehow altered?  I
don't have much hair to start with, and this is taking it's toll on what's
left.

You are right. I think you should write to the author of DarkSide, Tom Dowdy

I'm a Macintosh consultant here in Brazil and I'm working with a small
company.
This company has a network with Macintoshs and 486's. They use a proprietary
management DOS software that runs under Novel, this software is not used
continuosly but several briefly times a day. They need to use this software
also in the Macintosh, we have two options, develop a mac version of this
software that would cost a lot, our use SoftPC.
Because there is only four Macintoshs, the SoftPC solution was really
satisfactory having the best cost-benefit ratio. So we tested with a copy of
SoftAT, version 2.5 with SoftNode with a Quadra 800 connected to the same
ethernet network as the novel server, and the performance was good. So they
bought four Soft PC Professional version 3.1. Both, 2.5 and 3.1, are configured
with the same options and parameters, and using the same "HardDrive" document,
containing the same version of softnode. Our suprise is that the newer version
is several times slower than the older one in the same enviroment.
Resuming, what I'd like to know, if someone else had the same problem: the new
version  is slower than the older one.
